There is a new worldwide trend — shipping containers are being converted into homes and other utility structures! In the first few weeks of 2017 alone, there were several reports of projects based on this principle.
Homes produced from converted metal containers are sprouting up in several locations in South Florida, including one just outside Miami Shores. In this locality, three containers have been merged together to form a beautiful 1,000-square-foot house with two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Meanwhile in Hong Kong, South Korean architect Younjin Jeong has built a futuristic shopping mall created from 200 shipping containers. It has been eloquently named “Common Ground”, and is located in the Gwangjin District in the Korean capital city Seoul. In nearby Vietnam, a seaside resort-town of Nha Trang now has an entire hostel constructed out of recycled containers. The structure includes three stacked containers, each of which found new purpose as a guest room.
Houses of the Future
With entire generations of UK citizens being priced out of the traditional housing market, container homes appear to have a very bright future. Since old containers can be recycled, the supply is effectively limitless and the construction process is quick and affordable. There might be some prejudice associated with living in a container home, but that’s only until you see some of the more fashionable examples of such construction.
